KALICOY #1: Drafting

- January 5th, 2025 -

First entry of the lab is a plush idea that I've been working on. I haven't designed a plush for a couple years so I thought it was time to get back into it. My inspiration for this plush is my strange chunky cat, Artemis.

This is the cat of all time.

Naturally, I wanted to do something with koi fish and calicos mixed together so I drew a really rough sketch of Artemis if she was a silly koi creature. It's a little ugly since it was scanned and barely touched up. I usually sketch out ideas on paper before I make a digital mockup sheet.

First draft of the idea, I think I'll go back over it once I start making the physical prototype.

Before I took a break and started working on the website, I drew a mockup sheet. I'm considering on making the plush a beanie, this would be the perfect plush to have pellets put in for weight and 'flop'.

This is the first mockup done for this design, styled after a laying beanie.

This was a shorter entry due to the fact I haven't been active in plushmaking for several years and needed to do some small steps to get back into it. I have a lot to revise and edit, I should be making those changes in the prototyping stage (that's also when I'll have more interesting WIPs to show off). One of the things I know I have to change is the patterning on her body. I tried simplifying her markings but I should probably go even further and omit some splotches to keep this from being complicated. I'm not sure what size this beanie will be, figuring that out will also affect the complexity of the markings as well.

After this Artemis plush, I definitely want to turn her into other creatures and themes. I'm already thinking of doing a 'Fakemon' design, which should be super fun to draw. Something about making my own Artemis collection is a cool little thing to build. I feel like Valentines is already too close for me to make something in time but at least I have time to make a "HeArtemis" plush for next year.
